Maintenance Tips for your Automatic Home Backup Generator

October 25, 2022

South Shore Generator - Home Backup Generator

You invested in a Generac automatic home backup generator, and now you’re never without power. But just like a car, air-cooled backup generators need to be properly maintained to perform as intended. With power outages taking place daily throughout the country and hurricane season a few months around the corner, the experts at Generac have provided a few maintenance tips to keep your generator operating properly and at optimal efficiency.

For optimal efficiency when using your air-cooled generator, follow these tips:

When was the last time your unit had its air filter, oil filter, and spark plugs replaced? Most air-cooled units need to be serviced every 12 to 24 months, or after every 200 hours of use, whichever comes first. If your unit is due for service, contact your dealer, or order replacement parts. If you’re not sure how many hours your unit has operated, check the hour meter on the generator controller.

  • Make sure your unit and its major components are kept clean and free of any debris on both the inside and outside of the unit’s enclosure, including the intake and exhaust louvers on the sides of the generator.
  • Regularly check all major components for rust and/or corrosion. Exposure to outdoor conditions will increase the risk of rust, especially in coastal regions or where the climate is frequently wet or humid. Rust and corrosion can be prevented through ensuring proper installation and keeping your generator free of high-moisture areas (i.e. near downspouts or sprinklers). Contact a Generac authorized dealer for further assistance if your unit has any significant corrosion.
  • Clean and tighten battery terminals, and check the voltage state of the battery or if it is leaking any battery fluid. If you need to replace your battery, visit any auto parts or battery retailer, or contact your dealer.
  • Check the engine oil level to make sure it is full. If it needs to be refilled, refer to your manual for the correct type of oil. Also, keep a spare bottle of oil on hand, in case your area is hit with extended outages. If there is not enough oil in the unit, the generator will shut itself down to protect the engine.

If you need assistance completing these maintenance steps, contact one of Generac’s independent authorized dealers. Many have maintenance programs to ensure your backup generator remains in good condition. Contact South Shore Generator Sales & Services for more generator tips.
