Stay Safe Around Natural Gas

In its natural state, natural gas is colorless, tasteless, and odorless. To make it easier to detect in the event of a leak, we add a harmless, non-toxic (but unpleasant) odorant called mercaptan which smells like rotten eggs or sulfur.

If you ever suspect a gas leak in your home or business stay calm and leave the area immediately, even if the smell seems mild. Once you are in a safe space, dial 9-1-1 and then report the emergency to us at 800-525-8222.

Three Actions to Avoid:

• Don’t turn on or off anything that interacts with electricity while you exit to a safe area. This includes any electrical or light switches, doorbells, phones (landline or cellphone) – anything that could cause a spark has the potential to ignite leaking gas.
• Don’t try to find or repair the leak yourself. Our technicians are trained and prepared to investigate whatever the issue is upon their arrival.
• Don’t assume someone else will call 9-1-1 or us to report the leak. The sooner we’re notified the quicker we can make sure everyone is safe.
